Topic 01 · Stairs & railings

Railings: sanded, primed, ready for paint

Stained oak doesn't take paint well on its own. Every spindle, handrail and post is sanded and given a bonding primer first, so the finish grips and stands up to hands on the rail every day.

  1. Sand every spindle, rail and post
  2. Bonding primer over the stained wood
  3. Two coats of hard-wearing enamel

Topic 02 · Interiors

Ceilings and trim, sprayed smooth

Tall ceilings, columns and trim get sprayed for an even coat a roller can't match. Floors and furniture go under plastic first, then the edges are cut in by hand.

  1. Mask floors, furniture and windows
  2. Spray the ceiling, columns and trim
  3. Cut in the edges by hand

Specialty finish

Limewash, a soft mineral finish

Limewash is made from slaked lime, water and natural pigment. It soaks into the surface instead of sitting on top, so every brush pass leaves a slightly different tone. The result is a matte, cloudy finish that shifts as the light moves through the day.

Breathes
Moisture can escape through it, which suits brick, stone, stucco and plaster.
Turns to stone
As it cures it absorbs carbon dioxide from the air and hardens back into limestone.
Ages gently
Outdoors it wears down slowly over the years instead of peeling.

Questions

Good to know

Still unsure? Call 780-872-4316 and ask.

Do you paint in winter?

Yes, indoors. Interior work runs all year. Exterior painting needs dry weather and temperatures above about 10 °C, so in Calgary it usually happens between May and September.

Can stained oak railings be painted white?

Yes. Stained wood gets a light sanding and a bonding primer first, then two coats of a hard-wearing enamel so the handrail holds up to daily use.

What is limewash, and where can it go?

Limewash is a mineral paint made from slaked lime, water and pigment. It works best on porous surfaces like brick, stone, stucco and plaster. On drywall or previously painted walls, a mineral primer goes on first so the limewash can grip.

How long does limewash last?

Indoors it lasts like any other wall finish. Outdoors it weathers slowly instead of peeling, and most exteriors get a refresh coat every five to seven years.

How do I get an estimate?

Use the form on this page or call 780-872-4316. A few photos of the space and rough room sizes make the first conversation faster.
